"Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, Peterhof, Russia" by Catherine Sherman.
Two Russian women waiting at a corner are surrounded by pigeons near the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Petergof (Peterhof), Russia. Perhaps the birds are looking for a handout.
In 1882, Emperor Alexander II approved the construction of the cathedral to provide a large church for local residents, who weren't allowed into palace churches. Peterhof, the palace complex created by Tsar Peter the Great, is nearby.
The construction was finally completed under Tsar Nicholas II in 1905. In 1935, the church was closed.
During World War II, it was seriously damaged as was Peterhof. The cathedral was used by German military forces as artillery headquarters and to spy on Soviet ships from the tower. Later it became a warehouse. After a long period of restoration, church services resumed in January 1990.
The cathedral was designed in a Kievan Russian style as were most of the churches of that time. The façade is decorated with polychrome bricks and a red and green roof, and it has four entrances. It resembles Saint Basil Cathedral in Moscow. The main room, church services are celebrated, has high ceilings, good lighting and good acoustics.
The cathedral overlooks Olgin Pondand is surrounded by many other lakes and parks.
The cathedral's massive structure, more than 197 feet (60 meters) high, dominates the whole area. Visitors can enjoy a view of Peterhof and Saint Petersburg from the tower.

Historic Bonner Whitaker-McClendon House, Tyler, Texas Photo Print

Historic Bonner-Whitaker-McClendon House, Tyler Photo Print
by catherinesherman
"The Historic Bonner-Whitaker-McClendon House, Tyler, Texas" by Catherine Sherman.
Azaleas surround the Bonner-Whitaker-McClendon House, built in 1878.
This beautiful house was designated as a Tyler Historic Landmark in 1984 and is also a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark and on the National Register of Historic Places. Judge M. H. Bonner, a Texas Supreme Court Associate Justice, bought land from the estate of his former law partner, Texas' first governor, J. Pinckney Henderson, and than gave two acres to his oldest daughter Mattie, when she married attorney Harrison Whitaker.
The newlyweds built their house in 1878, furnishing it with fireplaces mantles, light fixtures, wallpaper and much of their furniture from a shopping trip to New York. The Whitakers presided over dinners and parties as a center of Tyler society. After Mattie died, the house was sold to Mattie's younger sister Annie and her husband Sidney McClendon.
The McClendons had nine children, the youngest of whom was Sarah, who became a noted Washington, D.C. journalist. Sarah was born in the house in 1910. McClendon graduated from Tyler Junior College in 1928, and from the University of Missouri's School of Journalism in 1931. She worked for newspapers in Texas, then enlisted in the Women's Army Auxililiary Corps, and reported for duty in September, 1942. She was married while in the Army and had a daughter.
In June 1944, after McClendon's discharge from the Women's Army Corps, famed newspaperman Bascom N. Timmons hired McClendon as a Washington, D.C. correspondent for the Philadelphia Daily News. In 1946, when Timmons discharged McClendon to make room for reporters returning from service in World War II, McClendon started her own service, the McClendon News Service, which provided Washington dispatches and columns to member newspapers and personal subscribers.
After a divorce, now a single mother, McClendon often brought her young daughter to news conferences, where she covered presidential politics for more than half a century. She was a model for women in journalism and as a vocal advocate of various causes, particularly those of United States military veterans. McClendon was known for posing incisive questions at U.S. presidential press conferences.
Of the 76 homes or buildings listed in the Tyler Register of Historic Places, only two are available for tours: The Goodman-Le-Grand Home which is owned and operated as the Goodman Museum by the city of Tyler and the McClendon House, which is self-financed and self-sustainingHistoric Bonner-Whitaker-McClendon House, Tyler, Texas.

"I'm Fishing for Groomsmen" Greeting Card
A picture is worth a thousand words. After Tom Rent adds his comical captions, a picture is priceless, as you can see in this example of one of his many wedding-related cards.
Check out Tom's groomsmen card by clicking on the card thumbnail.
Here's what Tom has to say about his work: "I'm not much of an artist, but my humor gets me by. As you can tell, my schtick is adding new life to old photos by adding imaginative Comical Captions.
Pick out a few while you're here. I encourage you also to customize the inside of the card to match your occasion. Your friends and family may just die laughing, and if so, I want the pictures. Thanks for visiting. TOM in Minnesota."
Tom and I are both artists at Greeting Card Universe, which is the world's largest online greeting store. There are more than half a million cards to choose from and a thousand new ones are added each day. You can personalize any card, and GCU will even mail the card for you.
I'm not as funny as Tom, so I don't attempt to write humorous captions very often. Tom has inspired me, though so I have a few in my store. Here's one of my cards I think is pretty funny, especially when you read the inside text.
Here's a birthday card for a father from a daughter where I let the photograph speak for itself.
Greeting Card Universe features more than half a million cards with more added each day from its designers. You can change the text and upload your own photograph to the inside of the card at no additional charge. Ship cards to your home or office, or, if you prefer, Greeting Card Universe will mail your personalized card to any address in the United States for only the cost of a stamp. It's easy! Glacier Bay National Park Alaska Poster
Glacier Bay in Alaska was declared a National Monument on February 26, 1925, a National Park and Wild Life Preserve on December 2, 1980, a UNESCO declared World Biosphere Reserve in 1986 and a World Heritage Site in 1992. That gives you just a hint of what a magnificent place it is.
Most of the tidewater and terrestrial glaciers in the Park are thought to be thinning and receding over the last several decades, but Margerie Glacier seems to be stable and Johns Hopkins Glacier is advancing.
Humpback whales spend the summer in Glacier Bay and the winter in Hawaii. Sounds pretty smart to me!

Sea Shells -- Gifts from the Sea
As a girl growing up in land-locked Kansas, I was fascinated by sea shells. I read books about the varieties of sea shells, bought shells when I could and collected the few freshwater clam shells that I found. Looking at photographs of these beautiful creatures from the sea introduced me to an exotic, beautiful world. As soon as I could, I visited beaches to collect my own. Some of my best specimens, I have to admit, I bought in shell shops, such as the conch shell my daughter is holding in my painting in the Happy Birthday card shown above. Most of the shells I've collected are small, and I arrange them in small jars with a little sand to give as gifts to other shell-lovers and beach goers. You can enjoy the beach year-round!
Greeting cards are another way to share sunshine, sand and sea shells. I'm among scores of Beach-lovers and Sea Shell Admirers who design cards using sea shell art and photographs at Greeting Card Universe.

Summertime Fruits and Fruit
"Summer afternoon - summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language." ~ Henry James ~
The fragrance of roses all summer long, the juice of ripe fruit on our lips, a butterfly visiting a flower, a dip into a cool pool on a hot day, a gentle breeze rustling in the leaves of towering trees as we lie in their shade. Ah, summer. We can capture these pleasures in art and photography and share them with our loved ones to celebrate special occasions and just the sheer joy of every day. Here are some of my summer-themed greeting cards from Greeting Card Universe. Click on the card thumbnails to see a larger view. The thumbnails open in a new window.
